Car Finance Calculator – A Simple Guide

Buying a car is a big commitment. Before you apply for finance, it helps to know what you can afford each month. Our car finance calculator lets you change the price, deposit, annual percentage rate (APR) and term to see how each factor changes your monthly payment. This guide explains how to use the tool and what the inputs mean.

Car finance calculator

How to use our car finance calculator

Our calculator (see above) is designed for quick comparisons. Follow these steps:

Step 1

Enter the car price or loan amount.

This is the cost of the car you want to finance. If you have a trade‑in or a deposit, subtract it so you only finance what you need.

Step 2

Choose your deposit.

A deposit is the money you pay upfront. Paying more up front reduces the amount you borrow and lowers your monthly payments. Some lenders will accept a low or zero deposit, but having one could improve your chances of approval. Remember to deduct the amount you wish to put down as a deposit from the amount you enter in the ‘Cash Price’ field.

Step 3

Be aware of the interest rate (APR).

The APR is the yearly cost of borrowing, including interest and any fees. Our quick view finance calculator uses a representative APR of 19.9%. Please be aware that the final offer you receive may differ from this.

Step 4

Select a term.

The term is how long you will take to repay the loan. Common terms range from 24 to 60 months. A longer term lowers your monthly payment but increases the total interest you pay. A shorter term costs more each month but can save you money overall.

Step 5

View your estimate.

The calculator shows an estimated monthly payment and the total amount you would repay. It is for guidance only and does not perform a credit check or make a lending decision.

Understanding the inputs

Car price or loan amount

Start with the total price of the car or the amount you plan to borrow. If you’re part‑exchanging a vehicle or adding a deposit, subtract these amounts so the loan figure is accurate. Borrowing less not only lowers your monthly payment but also reduces the interest you pay over the life of the loan.

Deposit

A deposit is an upfront payment that goes towards the car’s cost. According to specialist lender Moneybarn, offering a deposit can improve your chances of approval, even for applicants with missed payments or a County Court Judgment (CCJ). A larger deposit reduces the loan amount, which usually leads to lower monthly payments and less interest paid overall. Remember you’ll need enough money left over for insurance, tax and running costs.

Annual Percentage Rate (APR)

APR expresses the yearly cost of borrowing, including interest and fees. It lets you compare different finance offers. Academic research into auto loans shows that lenders charge higher APRs to borrowers with lower credit scores. If you have a good credit history, you may qualify for a lower rate. If your score is lower, you might need to budget for a higher APR. Use the calculator to see how small changes in APR affect your monthly payment.

Loan term

The term is how long you will repay the loan. Shorter terms (for example, 24 months) mean higher monthly payments but less interest overall. Longer terms (48 months or more) lower the monthly cost but increase the total interest. When choosing a term, think about your monthly budget and how long you plan to keep the car.

Finance options

Finance options you can model

The calculator can help you compare different types of car finance:

Hire Purchase (HP):

You typically pay a deposit and repay the full value of the car in fixed installments. After the final payment you own the vehicle. HP deals usually have higher monthly payments because you repay the entire cost.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP):

PCP works like HP at first. You typically pay a deposit and monthly payments, but you only repay part of the car’s value. At the end of the term you can pay a large balloon payment to keep the car, hand the car back or trade it in. The calculator estimates your monthly payments but does not include the balloon payment; remember to budget for it if you want to keep the car.

Personal loan:

You borrow a lump sum from a bank or lender and own the car from the start. Interest rates and terms vary. Use the calculator to see how different loan amounts and rates affect your payments. This type of agreement is not connected to the vehicle.

Affordability

How lenders assess your affordability

Lenders look at more than just the numbers you put in the calculator. They could help applicants even if they have missed payments, a CCJ or are self‑employed, as long as they meet certain criteria. You generally need to show a stable income, at least £1,000 per month after tax, be aged between 20 and 75, hold a full UK driving licence and provide recent payslips. These requirements help lenders decide how much you can borrow and what rate to offer.

Results

Interpreting the results

The calculator provides an estimate based on the figures you enter. It doesn’t account for your personal credit history or the lender’s specific criteria. A few things to remember:

01
Higher APR increases the total cost.

Research shows borrowers with lower credit scores pay higher APRs, so if your credit is poor you may need to budget for higher monthly payments.

02
Longer terms cost more overall.

Spreading repayments over a longer period lowers each monthly payment but increases the total amount paid in interest.

03
Larger deposits reduce payments.

Paying more up front lowers the loan amount and reduces the interest you pay.

04
Calculator is a guide only.

Using it won’t affect your credit score, and it doesn’t guarantee approval. Actual offers will depend on your credit report and the lender’s assessment.

There is no fixed APR for car finance. Rates depend on your credit score, the lender and market conditions. Research into auto loans shows borrowers with lower credit scores typically pay higher rates. For a starting point, use an average rate of 7‑10% for newer cars or 10‑15% for used cars. Try entering a range of rates to see how sensitive your monthly payment is to the APR.
Choose a term that balances monthly affordability and the total interest paid. Shorter terms (two or three years) have higher monthly payments but reduce your overall cost. Longer terms (four or five years) lower the monthly payments but increase the total interest. Use the calculator to experiment with different terms until you find one that fits your budget.
Yes. If you are trading in your current vehicle, subtract the trade‑in value from the car price before entering the loan amount. This reduces the amount you borrow and can lower your monthly payment. Remember that the final valuation will depend on the condition and mileage of your old vehicle.
No. The calculator is for planning only. It does not collect personal information, perform a credit check or share data with lenders. Only a formal finance application will leave a “hard search” on your credit file, which could temporarily lower your score.
