Why do lenders ask for a guarantor?
To be clear - most do not. But some lenders use a guarantor as a form of protection. If you have a poor or incomplete credit history, they may worry about lending you money. By adding a guarantor, often a family member or friend with a stronger credit record, the lender has someone to call on if you miss payments. This added security can increase the likelihood of approval. However, being a guarantor carries risks. The guarantor is responsible for your debt if you stop paying. Their credit score could be affected, especially if they cannot make the payments on your behalf. For this reason, some people prefer not to involve others in their finance agreement.
