Hire Purchase Car Finance UK: A Simple Guide to Fixed Payments

Buying a car on finance doesn’t always mean complicated jargon or hidden fees. Hire Purchase (HP) is one of the most straightforward ways to spread the cost of a new or used car. This guide explains how HP works, how it compares with PCP and other options, and how you can decide if it’s right for you.

UNDERSTANDING HP FINANCE

How Hire Purchase works

STEP 1 OF 3

Deposit

With HP you borrow enough money to cover the full price of the car. You sometimes pay a deposit, then repay the rest in fixed monthly installments over an agreed term, usually between one and five years.

Agreement term

The deposit is usually around 10% of the vehicle's price. A larger deposit lowers the amount you borrow and reduces your monthly payments.

Ownership at the end: You own the car outright once all payments, including any option-to-purchase fee, are made.
Fixed monthly payments: HP contracts have fixed monthly payments, so budgeting is simple.
No mileage restrictions: There are no mileage or wear-and-tear penalties during ownership because you're buying the car.
Accessible to those with weaker credit: Some lenders will consider applicants with poor credit because the loan is secured against the car.

HP vs PCP

Hire Purchase (HP) vs Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

People often compare Hire Purchase (HP) with Personal Contract Purchase (PCP). Both could require a deposit (this depends on the vehicle and individual circumstances) and regular payments, but they differ in how the payments are structured and what happens at the end:

Feature
Hire Purchase (HP)
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
Ownership at the end
You own the car once all payments and a small option-to-purchase fee are made.
You only own the car if you pay a final balloon payment; otherwise you return it or trade it in.
Monthly payment size
Usually higher because you’re repaying the full cost of the car.
Usually lower because you are deferring some of the cars value to a balloon payment.
Mileage limits
None. You’re buying the car, so there’s no mileage allowance.
Limited mileage; extra charges apply if you exceed the agreed limit.
Condition requirements
No penalty for fair wear and tear.
Car must be in good condition; damage fees can apply.
Final payment
Small option-to-purchase fee (sometimes as low as £1).
Large balloon payment to buy the car.

HP suits drivers who want to keep their car for many years and don’t want to worry about mileage or condition penalties. PCP is attractive for those who prefer lower monthly payments and the flexibility to change cars every few years. You can read more about PCP deals in our PCP car finance guide.

Pros and cons of hire purchase

Advantages:

Simple structure – you know exactly what you owe and when. Payments are fixed for the length of the contract.
Full ownership – you’ll own the car when the agreement ends. There is no big balloon payment to budget for.
No mileage or condition charges – because you’re buying the car, there are no restrictions on how far you drive or how you use it.
Protection – the finance company and dealer share responsibility for the car’s quality under UK consumer law.

Disadvantages:

Higher monthly payments – compared with PCP or leasing, HP payments are higher because you pay off the whole value of the car.
No selling or modifications until the end – you can’t legally sell or modify the car until you’ve settled the agreement.
Interest and depreciation – because you’re paying interest on the full amount, you could end up paying more than the car’s future value if it depreciates quickly.
Risk of repossession – if you miss payments, the lender can repossess the car.

Can I sell a car on HP finance?

You cannot sell a car that is still under a Hire Purchase agreement without settling the finance first. The finance company remains the legal owner until you make all the payments. If you want to sell the car early, contact the lender for a settlement figure. Paying this off will end the agreement so you can sell or trade in the car. This is sometimes called voluntary termination and may involve extra fees if you haven’t paid at least half of the total amount owed.

Hire Purchase is a way to spread the cost of buying a car. You pay a deposit, then fixed monthly payments over one to five years. Once the last payment and small option fee are made, the car is yours.
Under HP, you repay the entire cost of the car, so monthly payments can be higher and you own the vehicle at the end. PCP simply defers some of the cars value to a balloon payment -so payments can appear lower but you must pay a large final balloon payment to own the car. PCP also comes with mileage and condition limits.
Possibly. Because HP is secured against the car, some lenders accept applicants with poor credit. You may need a bigger deposit and will likely pay a higher interest rate. Using a broker like Car Loans UK can help match you with specialist lenders.
Yes. Once all monthly payments and any option-to-purchase fee have been paid, you own the car outright.
You should contact your finance provider immediately if you’re worried about missing a payment. Missing payments can lead to fees, damage your credit score and ultimately result in the car being repossessed.
